Nordic Semiconductor’s recently launched nRF9160? System-in-Package (SiP) LTE-M/NB-IoT cellular IoT module is among the first products to be awarded PSA Certified? Level 1 certification under a new IoT security initiative spearheaded by Arm.
PSA Certified provides a simple and_comprehensive approach to security testing. It comprises two elements: a multi-level, security robustness scheme (Levels 1,2 and_3) and_a developer focused API test suite. PSA Certified enables devices makers to achieve the security required for their use case through these three progressive levels of security assurance, each requiring increasingly rigorous hardware and_software evaluation, which are assigned by analyzing the use case threat vectors.
Nordic is providing highly integrated Arm-based cellular IoT solutions and_is among the first of our partners to deliver a Level 1 PSA Certified solution with the nRF9160 SiP cellular IoT module
Paul Williamson, Arm.
“Nordic’s nRF9160 SiP cellular IoT module was designed from the outset to embrace the highest levels of security and_PSA certification is an important independent verification of our commitment to that strategy,” says Svein-Egil Nielsen, CTO of Nordic Semiconductor. “While certification further reinforces customers’ confidence that the nRF9160 SiP is well protected, the product will form only one part of the IoT. As a leader in the IoT sector, Arm and_its test lab partners are well placed to build confidence in the security of the whole IoT ecosystem through PSA Certified and_Nordic Semiconductor is excited to partner with them in this important initiative.”
“In a world of a trillion connected devices trust is essential, and_it’s our industry’s responsibility to enable this trust,” said Paul Williamson, VP and_GM, Emerging Business Group at Arm. “PSA Certified enables IoT solution developers and_device makers to verify their solutions have been designed with a secure foundation, in line with PSA principles. Nordic is providing highly integrated Arm?-based cellular IoT solutions and_is among the first of our partners to deliver a Level 1 PSA Certified solution with the nRF9160 SiP cellular IoT module.”
Nordic Semiconductor’s nRF9160 SiP cellular IoT module is based on an Arm? Cortex?-M33 CPU core and_is the first in its class to incorporate Arm TrustZone? and_Arm CryptoCell security for Internet-level encryption and_application protection. The use of this Arm technology in Nordic’s nRF9160 eased the path to Level 1 because it already encompassed a lot of the security requirements demanded by the certification.

The nRF5340 incorporates Arm CryptoCell-312, Arm TrustZone? technology, and_Secure Key Storage for the highest level of security. With Arm CryptoCell-312 the most common Internet encryption standards are hardware accelerated and_Arm TrustZone provides system-wide hardware isolation for trusted software by creating secure and_non-secure code execution areas on a single core. The nRF5340’s combined security features enable advanced root-of-trust and_secure firmware updates while protecting the SoC from malicious attack.
The nRF5340 is based around dual Arm? Cortex?-M33 processors;_a high performance application processor running up to 128 MHz (510 CoreMark) with dedicated 1 MB Flash and_512 KB RAM, and_a fully programmable, ultra low power network processor running at 64 MHz (238 CoreMark) with dedicated 256 KB Flash and_64 KB RAM. The powerful application processor is very efficient (65 CoreMark/mA), has an 8 KB 2-way associative cache, is DSP and_floating point capable and_offers voltage and_frequency scaling options. The application processor integrates the Arm Cryptocell-312, Arm TrustZone, and_Secure Key Storage advanced security features, plus a wide range of interface peripherals including NFC, USB, QSPI, and_High Speed SPI. The fully programmable network processor is even more efficient (101 CoreMark/mA) and_is optimized for low power during radio operation and_low duty-cycle sensor data collection. Programmable access to the network processor offers optimal implementation of proprietary 2.4 GHz protocols, ensuring portability from the nRF51 and_nRF52 Series.
The nRF5340 incorporates a new, power-optimized multiprotocol 2.4 GHz radio with a TX current of 3.2 mA (0 dBm TX power, 3 V, DC/DC) and_RX current of 2.6 mA (3 V, DC/DC). Sleep current is as low as 1.1 μA. The SoC features enhanced dynamic multiprotocol support enabling concurrent Bluetooth LE and_Bluetooth mesh/Thread/Zigbee operation for provisioning/commissioning and_interaction with a mesh network from a smartphone using Bluetooth LE. The radio is capable of all Bluetooth 5.1 Direction Finding features. The nRF5340 operates over a 1.7 to 5.5 V supply voltage range, allowing supply from rechargeable batteries and_USB. The SoC integrates XTAL load capacitors for both 32 MHz and_32.762 kHz crystals, lowering by four the number of external components required compared with Nordic’s nRF52 Series - reducing both bill-of-materials (BOM) and_solution size.
