The TPS65990 integrates one 24-V VBUS source and sink capable powerpath, and provides control for an external 24-V VBUS source and sink capablepower path. Both paths have built in 30-V overvoltage protection and reverse current protection.The internal path has 5-A over-current protection (OCP) and the external pathcan support 10-A OCP. The device also integrates a dead battery LDO to power itself from VBUSduring dead battery conditions, so the battery can be charged.
A 600-mA VCONN power path is also integrated with OCP. The CC path also integratesvoltage clamping for 3.3-V tolerant PD controllers to be able to operate with 5 VRP pull-ups. The TPS65990will also support PD3.0 Fast Role Swap, providing the triggering and detection circuitry on CC, aswell as providing vSafe5V after the role swap has occurred through the internal VBUS path.
The TPS65990 provides 4-channels ofShort-to-VBUS Ovevoltage Protection for the CC1, CC2, SBU1, and SBU2 pins ofthe USB Type C connector. The TPS65990 also provides 5-channels of IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protectionfor the VBUS, CC1, CC2, SBU1, SBU2 pins of the USB Type C connector.
Since the release of the USB Type C connector, many products and accessories for USB TypeC have been released which do not meet the USB Type C specification. One example of this is USBType C Power Delivery adaptors that start with 20 V on the VBUS line withoutPD communication. Another concern for USB Type C is the mechanical sliding of the connectorshorting pins, due to the close proximity they have in this small connector. This could cause 20-VVBUS to be shorted to the CC and SBU pins. Also, due to the close proximity of the pins in the TypeC connector, there is a heightened concern that debris and moisture could cause the 20-V VBUS pinto be shorted to the CC and SBU pins.
These non-ideal accessories and mechanical events are making it necessary for the CC andSBU pins to be 20-V tolerant. However, many of the systems implementing USB Type C today are not20-V tolerant. The TPS65990 solves this issue by providing overvoltage protection onthe CC and SBU pins. The device places high voltage FETs in series on the SBU and CC lines. When avoltage above the OVP threshold is detected on these lines, the high voltage switches are openedup, isolating the rest of the system from the high voltage condition present on the connector.
