A display driver IC (DDI) is an integrated circuit designed to control the display subsystem in mobile phones, desktop and laptop computers, digital TV receivers, and external OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display panels, among others. The DDI is mapped between the application’s graphics processor and the display screen (such as LCD or LED screen), and is responsible for controlling the application’s display and implementing power management features, such as “automatic idle power off”. Various types of devices are equipped with displays, and specific types of DDIs are required for each type of device.


DDIs are available for devices across two broad categories - mobile devices and panel devices. Mobile devices include mobile handsets and smartphones, whereas panel devices include LCD/LED screens, CTSN (Color Super-Twist Nematic, a type of passive matrix color LCD), TFT, and OLED panels that are used in laptop and tablet computers, desktop monitors, and digital TVs. Timing controllers and touchscreen controllers are additional types of DDIs that provide advanced features for displays, such as recognition of multi-touch input. Samsung provides DDI solutions across all these segments.


Samsung mobile DDI solutions comprise an entire line-up of single-chip devices for CSTN, TFT, and OLED displays widely used in the mobile segment. These devices offer the widest range of features in the smallest form factors at the lowest power consumption levels. Samsung offers a similar suite of DDI products for display panels. These devices tolerate wide input voltages and operate at significantly lower temperatures than earlier versions, lowering the in-use costs (such as cooling costs) for the devices. Additionally, Samsung has a full range of timing controllers that support multiple connection interfaces, and touchscreen controllers with dedicated, inbuilt processors and on-chip firmware and memory. Samsung DDI solutions enable designers, developers, and system integrators to deliver high performance products with superior displays that consume the lowest power, in the shortest time-to-market, at the lowest BoM costs.
