High-Output, High-Efficiency OSRAM SFH 471xAS IREDs Now Shipping from Mouser
High-Output, High-Efficiency OSRAM SFH 471xAS IREDs Now Shipping from Mouser
October 6, 2015 - Mouser Electronics, Inc. is now stocking the new SFH 4715AS and SFH 4716AS infrared LEDs (IREDs), part of the IR OSLON Black family from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. These small infrared LEDs improve on previous generations of OSLON Black SFH 471x IREDs, increasing output to over 1 watt. The SFH 471xAS IREDs are built on an optimized package and Nanostack technology, in which each chip has two emission layers. Depending on the type of camera and number of infrared light emitting diodes, the SFH 471xAS can provide illumination over a distance of more than 328 feet (100 meters), which make them ideal IR light sources for many camera-based applications.
OSRAM OSLON Black SFH 4715AS and SFH 4716AS IREDs, now available from Mouser Electronics, come in a small 3.85 mm2 package with an integrated lens that allows superior compact arrangements of very high power density. The LEDs have a low thermal resistance of 9 K/W (max), a centroid wavelength of 850nm and a typical optical power that reaches 1.34 W with 42 percent efficiency at 1A. With beam angles of 90 degrees (SFH 4715AS) or 150 degrees (SFH 4715AS) and reduced cooling requirements, the LEDs efficiently deliver high output power while requiring fewer components, saving cost and board space.
With their extended output and range, the SFH 471xAS IREDs provide efficient infrared light for surveillance, gesture recognition and machine vision systems.

October 6, 2015 - Mouser Electronics, Inc., the global authorized distributor with the newest semiconductors and electronic components, applauds the winners of the 2015 Create the Future Design Contest. The Grand Prize of $20,000 was won by AortixTM, a catheter-deployed heart pump intended for long-term treatment of chronic heart failure. It was developed by Procyrion, Inc. of Houston.
As it did in 2014, Mouser is a major sponsor of the annual Tech Briefs Media Group "Create the Future" Design Contest, a global challenge to engineers and students to create the next great thing. Mouser was joined in the 2015 sponsorship by its valued partners Analog Devices and Intel.
The winners will be recognized at an awards dinner on November 6th in New York City. The contest attracted more than 1,100 innovative ideas from engineers and students in 60 countries.
"Thinner than a pencil and only 6 centimeters long, AortixTM has the potential to become a low-risk circulatory assist device for a broad range of patients," said Omar Benavides, leader of the Procyrion team that won in the medical category to capture the Grand Prize overall. The Grand Prize was chosen from the winners in seven categories.
The other categories and winners are:
Aerospace & Defense - An ultra-small, low-cost hazardous gas detector using novel chip-scale chemical sensor technology. It was developed by a team headed by Nichole Sullivan of N5 Sensors, Inc. of Rockville, MD.
Automotive/Transportation - An environmentally friendly coating system for early detection and inhibition of corrosion and self-healing of mechanical damage without external intervention developed by Jeffrey Kohler at the NASA Kennedy Space Center Corrosion Technology Lab.
Consumer Products - The BomBoard, an affordable high performance jet board/jet ski transportable in the back of a car, developed by Anders Stubkjaer of Whitewater, WI
Electronics - An optic sensing system technology that represents a major breakthrough in high-speed operational monitoring and sensing developed by Lance Richards at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center.
Machinery/Automation/Robotics - A compact long-reach robotic arm developed by William R. Doggett at NASA's Langley Research Center.
Sustainable Technologies - A system of solar lighting with fiber optics developed by Stephanie le Beuze of Champs-Sur-Marne, Ile-de-France.
"We congratulate all of the winners for their ingenuity, and commend all of the entrants for taking part in this exciting program that fosters technological innovation," said Kevin Hess, Vice President of Technical Marketing at Mouser Electronics. "As a distributor of leading technologies, 'Creating the Future' is very much at the heart of what we support here at Mouser, and we are excited to help design engineers and want to thank them for their important contributions. Engineers really deserve the credit for the amazing ingenuity we are seeing today in electronic design."
"Mouser is known worldwide for their rapid introduction of the newest products, and unparalleled support of innovation," said Joseph Pramberger, President of Tech Briefs Media Group. "We are excited for the opportunity to work with such a solid partner - one known in the industry for their strong commitment to foster and serve engineers and their design needs."
Entries were judged on Innovation (50% of score), Manufacturability (25%) and Marketability (25%). For a complete list of this year's winners, visit http://www.mouser.com/createthefuture.
